On 15 August 1977, astronomer Jerry R. Ehman discovered an unusually strong radio signal while examining data from the Big Ear radio telescope. The signal lasted for 72 seconds and was so remarkable that he circled it on the printout and wrote the word "Wow!", giving the signal its famous name.
Scientists have never detected the exact same signal again. Although many natural explanations have been suggested, no single theory has been confirmed. Because of this, the Wow! Signal remains one of the most famous unsolved mysteries in astronomy.
